ASD and Cardiac implant closure devices

ASD and Cardiac implant closure devices

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is commonly referred to as a hole in the heart. The hole is present in between the upper chambers of the heart. Complications of ASD include right-sided heart failure, irregular heartbeat, stroke, early death, and pulmonary hypertension.

Small ASDs may close on their own, but medium to large-sized ASDs need surgical correction or closure using a device. If left untreated, it is known that atrial septal defects reduce life expectancy.

Closure devices are used to close defective openings between the left and right chambers of the heart. This closure requires a special device. The device is folded or attached to a special catheter, this catheter is inserted into a vein in the leg and advanced into the heart through the defect. The device is slowly pushed to the defective opening and is covered on each side to close and cover the hole and hence closing the heart and the defect. Once the device is in a proper position, it is removed from the catheter.

After the device implantation, the catheter is removed and the heart tissue grows over the implant over time, and the implant becomes a part of the heart. The procedure can be monitored by X-ray or ultrasound.

While preparing you for the device closure procedure, your doctor or nurse will give you instructions related to your food intake a day prior to the procedure. You will have to inform the doctor about your medications. If you are diabetic, the doctor may adjust your medications a day before. You will have to inform the doctor of your allergies.

The hospital stays maybe for a day or two where you will be monitored for the success of the implant. Once your cardiologist is satisfied with the procedure you will be discharged.

Cardiac implants correct ASDs and prevent the development of pulmonary hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and heart failure.
